School Kitchens

School kitchens in the Western Cape

The Peninsula School Feeding Association, a Western Cape non-profit organisation, feeds over 325, 000 children a day, in over 730 schools. And whilst the PSFA has the objective that every school child has at least one meal a day, many schools still have no proper kitchen facilities.

This lack of kitchens, and the burgeoning need, means that the PSFA has a requirement for the rapid construction of free standing units in poorer areas throughout the Western Cape. As a result, the PSFA has commissioned Concretex to use its modular building system, normally used to build affordable homes, to build school kitchens.

Many schools have been coping for years with makeshift kitchen facilities, and the PSFA’s intervention, not only with the provision of meals, but also new kitchens, has been met with delight, from school principals to the children.

The aim is to get each kitchen up and running as quickly as possible. From laying the foundation floor slab, to handing over the building, takes as little as two weeks. Materials are delivered on site and used the same day, and all plumbing and electrical conduits are internal to the panels which makes the connection of services very straightforward and means that no making good or remedial plaster work is required.

These economies of scale and time translate into significant savings compared with conventional brick and mortar, particularly when the schools, dotted in all sorts of locations, have a requirement for a single standardised unit.

Pictured here are two Cape Town schools; J.S Klopper in Elsies River, and Dagbreek Primary School in Heideveld, both recent beneficiaries of new Concretex kitchen units, donated by the PSFA. If you’d like to make a donation to the PSFA, please visit their website - www.psfa.org.za
